Triplett Technical School is set to soar with the introduction of it’s new aviation program. Pilot Training I and II, are scheduled to launch in the fall of 2025.  This groundbreaking program shows Shenandoah County Public Schools’ ongoing initiative to bring cutting-edge education to our county. Designed for 11th and 12th graders, the program will equip aspiring pilots with a comprehensive, hands-on education, preparing them for successful careers in an industry experiencing rapid growth.

The decision to introduce pilot training at Triplett Tech was a direct response to student interest. After surveying those eager to pursue aviation-related programs, pilot training emerged as the top preference, outpacing other potential courses such as unmanned aircraft/drones and aircraft mechanics. This overwhelming demand underscores the increasing appeal of aviation careers, which offer high-wage, high-growth opportunities for those willing to embark on the journey.

Through a private/public partnership, Triplett Tech has secured funding to provide the state-of-the-art flight simulators and other industry-standard equipment without burdening taxpayer,  giving students the opportunity to develop critical flying skills in a safe and controlled environment. The program is structured as a one-year course, with enrollment capped at 20 students to comply with Virginia Department of Education and OSHA standards.

Participants will work toward passing the Federal Aviation Administration small pilot license written exam, marking a significant milestone in their pilot training. Upon certification, students will be required to complete “stick” time, gaining real-world experience with actual flight hours via simulators.

Shenandoah County Public Schools Superintendent Melody Sheppard expressed her enthusiasm for this addition, stating,

"The addition of aviation to our CTE offerings is a reflection of our commitment to preparing our students for the future. We expect this program to be extremely popular, as it opens doors to exciting, in-demand career pathways in a thriving industry. We are grateful to our partners for their support and look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have for years to come."

In addition to classroom education and simulator training, students will explore regional and municipal airports to gain firsthand experience in professional aviation settings. Planned field trips include visits to Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, Winchester Regional Airport, and Dulles International Airport, providing insight into different operational environments.

Students will also have access to local municipal airstrips in New Market, Luray, and Bryce, further enriching their aviation education.

Triplett Tech’s aviation program is set to be a game-changer, offering students an unprecedented opportunity to enter the thriving aviation sector. As Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs continue to expand within Shenandoah County Public Schools, this latest offering solidifies the district’s commitment to preparing students for in-demand careers.

Reflecting on CTE’s growth within the district, Triplett Tech Principal Todd Lynn shared his optimism, stating,

"CTE continues to grow within SCPS, and we look forward to what the next chapters bring for Triplett Tech and CTE."

The excitement surrounding the aviation program is undeniable, with students, educators, and industry leaders eagerly anticipating its launch. As Triplett Tech continues to expand its career-focused technical education offerings, this new program will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of pilots.

For students who dream of taking to the skies, the opportunity has arrived in Shenandoah County.
