Fentanyl in Shenandoah County

Sheriff Timothy Carter of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office is leading the charge in combatting the fentanyl crisis that has infiltrated communities nationwide. His unwavering commitment to community safety and proactive initiatives has made a significant impact in Shenandoah County.

Public Awareness Campaigns

Partnering with the Shenandoah County Public School System and other organizations, Sheriff Carter’s office developed a public awareness campaign. This “all call” campaign, disseminated to all parents, provides crucial information on various issues, including fentanyl. The goal is to empower families with knowledge about these drugs and their effects on young people.

Educating Parents: “Hidden in Plain Sight”

Sheriff Carter’s team conducts meetings with parents through the “Hidden in Plain Sight” program. Parents learn to recognize common drug trends and identify signs of drug use in their children. This proactive approach helps families stay informed and vigilant.

Youth Education: Virginia Rules and D.A.R.E.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office actively educates young students:

Virginia Rules: Middle school-aged children learn about laws, consequences, and outcomes related to drug use and violations of Virginia laws.

D.A.R.E. Program: Elementary school-aged children participate in decision-making education, which now includes a fentanyl component.

Collaborations and Initiatives

Sheriff Carter’s office collaborates with various county and regional groups:

Northwest Virginia Drug and Gang Task Force: Enforces and shares law enforcement and investigation resources.

Shenandoah County Family Youth Initiative: Provides resources and community awareness about youth drug use.

“One Pill Can Kill” Initiative: In partnership with the Virginia State Attorney General and Drug Enforcement Administration, this initiative raises awareness about fentanyl-pressed pills.

Alternative to Incarceration: Drug Treatment Court

Sheriff Carter actively works with the Shenandoah County Drug Treatment Court. This innovative program offers an alternative to incarceration for individuals struggling with drug addiction.

Alarming Statistics

The severity of the fentanyl crisis is evident from the following statistics:

Approximately half of the drug/narcotic cases in Shenandoah County involve fentanyl, opioid prescription pills, or pressed fentanyl pills.

Two Shenandoah County juveniles have tested positive for fentanyl in the past two months.

In 2024, the region has witnessed 11 drug overdose injuries and 5 deaths.

Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Departments efforts spotlighttheir commitment to keeping Shenandoah County safe from the dangers of fentanyl and other drugs. Through education, collaboration, and proactive measures, he continues to make a difference in the fight against this lethal drug.
