Did you know that at the time of the American Revolution, nine out of every ten adult males were farmers? We are a nation founded by farmers. It was the world view, beliefs and experiences of those who worked the land that inspired the movement toward independence. The virtues and ethics of the farmer were woven into our constitution and became a part of who we are as Americans. Thomas Jefferson, in his “Notes on Virginia” was wholly convinced that free government was best nurtured among those who toil in the ground. For 250 years, Shenandoah County has remained a community closely connected to its agricultural roots and has carried forward many values, basic beliefs and cultural norms that would be familiar to the founders of this country. The next time you see a farmer, thank them not just for the food on your table, but for keeping us grounded in our most important traditions as a nation.
