Prioritizing Safety and Security
Dr. Melody Sheppard, the Division
Superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools, has made it her mission to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. With over 23 years of experience as a school administrator, Dr. Sheppard brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to her role.
A Drug-Free Environment
“Our schools should be positive, supportive environments where students can learn and grow,” emphasizes Dr. Sheppard. “For them to meet their full potential, it is important that they remain drug-free.” This commitment extends beyond academic success; it’s about nurturing healthy futures for every student.
Early Education and Smart Choices
Dr. Sheppard recognizes that prevention starts early. The Family Life Curriculum, beginning in fourth grade, includes essential drug education. Teaching students to make informed decisions from an early age is crucial in preventing drug use.
Collaborating with Law Enforcement
Shenandoah County Public Schools values its partnership with the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office. Having a School Resource Officer (SRO) in each school is a significant benefit. SROs build relationships with students, encouraging responsible decision-making and serving as law-related educators.
D.A.R.E. Program: Empowering Fifth Graders
One of the cornerstones of drug education is the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. Aimed at fifth graders, D.A.R.E. educates students about the dangers of drugs and equips them with the tools to make responsible choices. Dr. Sheppard and her team actively coordinate this essential program.
Empowering Parents and Guardians
Parents and guardians play a pivotal role in keeping students drug-free. Earlier this school year, Shenandoah County Public Schools partnered with the Sheriff’s Office to disseminate public service announcements. These resources empower families to have open conversations with their children about the risks associated with drugs.
Dr. Melody Sheppard’s leadership underscores the collective responsibility we share in safeguarding our students. By working together—educators, law enforcement, parents, and the community—we can create a healthier, safer environment for Shenandoah County’s youth. Let’s keep our students healthy, informed, and drug-free.
